Set during England's Industrial Revolution, a 12-year old girl wrestling with grief after her mother's recent passing and struggling to find her place in a patriarchal society, finds joy in her father's newest additions to their family farm - 12 Alpacas. Through studying the alpacas for a school project, she discovers they're able to speak, only to realize, all of the animals on the farm can speak and they have a lot to say about their living conditions, especially the feed! When the farm manager is accidentally hurt doing repairs on the property, her father hires a new manager. The girl and the animals discover this new manager's plot for slaughtering the animals and stealing the profits from her father and they must find a way to stop him before it's too late.
